Non-Chorine Shock Oxidizer (Renew Granules) | Spa and Hot Tub Owners Blog.com

Non-Chorine Shock Oxidizer (Renew Granules)

by Steve

This article gives info about Non-Chlorine Shock Renew granules and tablets.

There is an alternative to hot tub and spa water chlorine shock treatment called “Non Chlorine Shock”. They often use an oxidizing compound containing potassium mono-persulfate.  These alternative shocks are sometimes preferred because they don’t add any chlorine which may contribute to further chloramine formation. A good example of popular non-chlorine shock used for hot tub water care is Renew Granules.

Leisure Time Simple Spa Care Products are for Spas & Hot Tub systems.  Leisure Time Renew is a Non-Chlorine shock oxidizer available in both granule and tablet form. The fast dissolving chemical granules are ideal for hot tubs. Renew clears spa water of residual soaps, deodorants, natural oils and organic materials such as algae that can build up in spa water. Renew helps maintain clear odour free water.

Reacts With Bromide

When Non Chlorine Oxidizer is added to the Spa or Hot Tub water it reacts with the bromide and forms a bromine solution to kill any micro organisms and residues left behind by the bather and prevents the growth of bacteria. It’s part of the Reserve & Renew Chlorine Free Sanitizing System which can help keep your spa water healthy and clear as part of a regular spa maintenance program.

Renew granules dissolve quickly in hot tub water to breaks down oils residues and eliminates organic materials and bacteria that can cause skin and eye irritation or odours.  Buffer potassium monopersulfate compound formulated with DuPont Oxone allows for use of the hot tub minutes after application when used in a weekly regime to keep your spa clean and in top condition.  The pH is buffered so it does not effect pH levels in the spa water.

Details of use
This product can also be used as a shock treatment for chlorine systems. Always add Leisure Time Renew granules after using the spa so the bather is not exposed to any sanitizers while in the water.  Use as follows:

  • Turn on filtration system.
  • For each 250 gallons of water add 2 ounces (45 grams) of granules or 3 tablets into the hot tub water.
  • Run the filtration system for 15 minutes with the cover off.
  • Repeat the process once a week to help maintain clear, odor-free water.

More About Bromine and Non-Chlorine Shock Oxidizers

Bromine can be added to a hot tub in the form of tablets or granules. Tablets are better for slow release when used in a floating dispenser whilst granules are good for fast dissolving shock treatments. One form is sodium bromide, which needs to be activated with an oxidizer such as chlorine or Potassium Monopersulfate (non-Chlorine) shock. Many hot tub owners prefer bromine over chlorine because it doesn’t evaporate at temperatures higher than 98F (37C) and produces fewer odours.

About pH Levels
If the pH of your hot tub water is less than 7.2 then it is too acidic and can corrode parts of your hot tub. It will also irritate skin and eyes.
If your water is above 7.8 it is too alkaline. High alkalinity which can cause scaling from minerals like calcium and metals in the water forming deposits and stains on your hot tub’s acrylic surface of the hot tub or spa.  Before adding any sanitizing agent or chemicals to your hot tub, it is recommended that you first test the current levels by using a pH test strip.

Take care to always follow the manufacture’s instructions when using chemicals and equipment for your Hot Tub or Spa and test the condition of your water regularly.
Be safe and enjoy your Spa Time!
